Department of Energy and State of Connecticut Office of Policy and Management Provide City of New Haven with Energy Grant
The City of New Haven received a $125,000 grant from the State of Connecticut’s Office of Policy & Management (“OPM”) and the United States Department of Energy (“DOE”). The purpose of the grant is to demonstrate the ability to develop a centralized infrastructure to manage a large municipal energy portfolio in a proactive structured approach. The goal of the program is to demonstrate that the successful implementation can lead to sustainable and long-term energy consumption and cost reductions.
The City of New Haven retained Nxegen, Inc. as the City’s Energy Manager. Nxegen’s scope of services includes the collection of historical utility billing and consumption data for the City’s various departments and authorities. The collection of historical billing data provides the City with a baseline of energy use and costs.
Nxegen is also responsible for developing, implementing, and managing a state-of-the-art wireless energy monitoring and load management system throughout the City’s largest energy consuming facilities. Nxegen’s wireless monitoring and load management system provides the ability to receive energy use data real-time to a central location where energy technicians can monitor and manage energy use and costs on a proactive basis. The system also includes the capability of sending real-time commands to control energy levels to minimize energy costs during peak periods of the day.
With this infrastructure, the City anticipates reducing annual energy consumption and costs by 10 to 15%, resulting in energy cost reductions of $1 million to $1.5 million per year. In addition to reduced energy consumption, the City, working with Nxegen, OPM, and DOE anticipate that the overall City’s load profile will substantial improve resulting in increased purchasing leverage as deregulation unfolds in Connecticut.
